Sikh Coalition Supports Impeachment of President Donald Trump
January 13, 2021 (New York, NY) — On January 6, President Donald Trump incited insurrection against the United States after months of working to delegitimize the free and fair democratic election that he lost.
The president’s words and actions directly led to an attack on the U.S. Capitol intended to stop the certification of President-Elect Joe Biden’s electoral win. He did so while enabling and encouraging his supporters to behave violently and spreading flagrant lies about the election outcome. The results of last Wednesday left five dead–including a Capitol Hill police officer–and dozens injured and arrested, and multiple reports indicate that the situation easily could have been so much worse. For Americans nationwide, it was also a dark but clear reminder about how fragile democracy in the United States is when the president willfully ignores its principles and repeatedly attacks it.
Accordingly, the Sikh Coalition is calling for President Trump’s impeachment. He must be held directly accountable for his undemocratic actions, in a manner that is swift and strong enough that no president ever feels emboldened to act this way again.
“Sikhs have a long history, as well as a spiritual imperative, to not just speak out but to act against unjust leadership,” said Satjeet Kaur, Sikh Coalition Executive Director. “The Sikh Coalition has continuously advocated for accountability, because actions and speech have consequences. It is essential for the future health of our democracy that President Trump be held responsible for his central role in the horrific events of January 6.”
