Our Work in Indianapolis This Year

Dear Supporter Ji,

As the Senior Legal Client Manager with the Sikh Coalition, my job puts me in direct contact with community members who have survived hate crimes and perservered through discrimination in the workplace. Bearing witness to trauma, whether hate-based or not, can be difficult–and it has rarely been harder than the experience of the Indiana sangat earlier this year.

Our nation was shocked and mortified when eight people, four of them Sikhs, were murdered in a gunman’s shooting spree at the FedEx ground facility in Indianapolis last April. But from the earliest moments of the tragedy, the Sikh Coalition was ready to serve and support the sangat.

All told, four of our teammates rushed to Indianapolis in the days and weeks after the tragedy as our entire staff worked around-the-clock to support the sangat in crisis. But our commitment to this work continues today, with ongoing legal support for clients who were injured in the attack and more community resources distributed in just the past few weeks.

We hope and pray these kinds of tragedies never happen, and we fight every day for better laws and policies to prevent them. Unfortunately, the sad reality is that disaster can still strike–and when families are in need, it takes resources to support them and make sure they get the justice they deserve. The Sikh Coalition is only able to do our work on behalf of families and sangats in need due to contributions from supporters like you. I hope you’ll consider supporting us in your year-end giving so that next time tragedy strikes, we can continue to help those who need it most.

Chardi Kala,

Aasees Kaur
