Sikh Awareness Training to Reach 100+ Educators at Indiana High School

March 14, 2022 (Whiteland, IN) — Today, the Sikh Coalition is hosting a Sikh awareness training for more than 100 administrators and staff at Whiteland Community High School (WCHS) in Whiteland, Indiana. This training is taking place exactly one week after our Sikh client returned to school with a safety plan in place after facing severe bias-motivated harassment and assault on February 23.

In the aftermath of our client’s assault, school administrators responded quickly to both ensuring the immediate safety of our client and committing to action steps that will begin to address the broader issues of bias-based bullying at WCHS and within its district. At today’s training, WCHS educators will have an opportunity to learn more about the Sikh faith and community–one of the fastest-growing demographics within the school–and how to recognize and respond to incidents of religious-based bullying that may take place at school.

“No one deserves to be targeted for their faith or for anything else that makes them unique–especially at school,” said Harman Singh, Sikh Coalition Senior Manager of Education. “This training is a good first step and, in the weeks and months ahead, we look forward to strengthening our dialogue with school administrators and bringing forward additional opportunities for area educators to get involved.”

As the Sikh Coalition continues working with WCHS officials to ensure a safe learning environment for all students, we will advocate for every educator across the school district to receive this training, and in turn, become better equipped to respond to issues of bias-based bullying. The district has engaged in discussions regarding incorporating Sikh awareness into their professional development training programs and within their middle school curriculum. Additionally, administrators have engaged with local community groups to address challenges and concerns which may impact the in-school environment.

“Providing a school environment that is welcoming and inclusive of all students is a top priority for the Clark-Pleasant Community Schools, our administration, and staff at Whiteland Community High School,” said Dr. Patrick Spray, Clark-Pleasant Community Schools Superintendent. “We remain committed to ensuring the safety of our students and will continue to cultivate opportunities that work to meet this goal.”
