May 18, 2022 (Washington, DC) — After a successful nationwide leadership search, the Sikh Coalition–the largest Sikh civil rights organization in the United States–is proud to announce Anisha Singh as our new Executive Director. Singh brings to the Sikh Coalition more than 15 years of experience in public interest and social justice work, with a strong grassroots organizing and legal background.
Throughout her career, Singh has fought for the civil rights of all through extensive legal, legislative, lobbying, and community mobilizing work. As she now returns to the Sikh civil rights causes that sparked her passion for advocacy, she brings additional expertise around core areas of the Sikh Coalition’s work including anti-bullying efforts, employment discrimination, and accommodations for articles of faith; she also has experience in issues including immigration, reproductive health care, voting rights, judicial nominations, and gun violence prevention.
“I am honored and excited to be returning to the civil rights work that started my career by stepping into this new role with the Sikh Coalition,” said Anisha. “This organization–with its incredible track record in advocacy, community development, education, legal, and media efforts–has long been near and dear to my heart. I look forward to working with sevadaars (volunteers) and sangats (communities) across the nation at the intersection of two pivotal moments: the third decade of the Sikh Coalition’s existence, and the continued, urgent reckoning with civil rights and hate violence in our country.”
Prior to joining the Sikh Coalition, Singh led the courts and democracy programs at Planned Parenthood Federation of America as the Director of Judiciary and Democracy Affairs, where she developed strategies to both protect reproductive healthcare in U.S. courts and find ways to bring the levers of power in government and voting systems back to the people. Before her time at Planned Parenthood, she held two positions at the Center for American Progress (CAP), including Senior Organizing Director for Generation Progress and Campaign Manager at Legal Progress. Additionally, she served as a policy attorney and project manager position with United Sikhs.
“Anisha has built an incredible career in public service and social justice, and we are excited for her to bring that experience to the team as she returns to the Sikh civil rights causes that she cares deeply about,” said Narinder Singh, Sikh Coalition Executive Board Chairman. “Her leadership and vision, along with the ongoing hard work of our professional staff, engaged board members, and our wide variety advisors and allies, will drive the Sikh Coalition forward into our third decade.”
In her new position, Singh will be responsible for shaping and implementing the organization’s strategic plan. She will manage the day-to-day operations of the Sikh Coalition, including our nearly 20 full-time staff members who are spread across the United States, from Washington, DC.
