Phulkari is a hand-embroidered textile hailing from East and West Punjab. The word “ਫੁਲ (phul)” translates from Punjabi to “flower” and “ਕਾਰੀ (kari)” as “work” or “craft.” This traditional, embroidery technique is exclusive to Punjab and has been primarily weaved by Punjabi Sikh women throughout decades. The most common motifs in Phulkari embroidery include trees, animals, birds, and wildlife due to the reverence of nature in Punjabi Sikh roots. There are many other names for Phulkari, such as “ਬਾਗ਼” (baagh), which translates to “garden”, and “ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੁਆਰ” (darshan dwaar), meaning “the entrance” or “opening gate”. These names are figurative and poetic-like because of the in-depth stitching and expressive design on the Phulkari. Traditional Phulkaris could take months, even years to complete and are cherished within families for generations!
