SIKH HELPLINE AUSTRALIA needs your support. End of financial year is fast approaching, please open your heart and send your donation now. Make a difference in the lives of those who are in need. You can donate as an individual or as an organisation. The Sikh population has increased significantly and the latest 2011 ABS census indicates there are 72,297 Sikhs across Australia, with 21,705 residing in NSW. Over time, Sikhs have migrated from Punjab (northern Indian state), United Kingdom, Malaysia, Singapore, Fiji Islands and Kenya. Sikhs have contributed to Australian society through diverse industries, professional roles, farming and agriculture, taxi industry and business hospitality sector. Sikhs have a unique identity, in which baptised or initiated Sikhs will wear the turban and keep long hair and beard. Sikh children and youth who attend primary or high school may wear the patka (smaller head dress) or Turban. In 2015, the Sikh Helpline Australia (SHA) was established to address the social issues impacting on the Sikh community primarily, such as: racism/discrimination, bullying, domestic violence, immigration and legal support.
